Status of Alaska Natives Report

Volume II

2000 Census Data by ANCSA Region:

Alaska Native or American Indian Alone

Introduction

Volume II and Volume III of the Status of Alaska Natives Report contain data tables generated from the 2000 U.S. census describing the Alaska Native American population by the 12 Alaska Native Regional Corporation boundaries. Volume II shows data for the population in Alaska reporting Native American as their only race (Alaska Native or American Indian Alone) and Volume III shows data for the population reporting Native American in combination with some other race (Alaska Native or American Indian Alone or in Combination). At the time of the 2000 Census, there were 98,043 single-race Native Americans in Alaska and 119,241 people who identified themselves as Native American in combination with some other race.

The tables in these volumes have been generated from a special file prepared by the U.S. Census Bureau that contains detailed information on the Native American population for the entire United States. The AIANSF (American Indian and Alaska Native Summary File) is accessible on the internet at

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/DatasetMainPageServlet

On that site one can also obtain information for the Alaska Native population (excluding American Indians) as well as information by tribal affiliation. However, because the data in the file is based upon a sample of the population, it is subject to some error. One can see this by comparing the total population estimates by ANCSA region reported in Volumes II and III (from the AIANSF) with the population counts reported in Volume I of this report.

The tables in these volumes are available as a set of Excel spreadsheets from the Institute of Social and Economic Research.

Description

The American Indian and Alaska Native Summary File, like Summary File 4, presents information on the population and housing data collected on a sample basis from the Census 2000 long-form questionnaire as well as the topics from the short form 100-percent data (age, race, sex, Hispanic or Latino origin, tenure [whether a housing unit is owner- or renter-occupied], and vacancy status). This summary file is repeated or iterated for the total population, for the total American Indian and Alaska Native population, the total American Indian population, and total Alaska Native population, and for 1,081 additional specified American Indian and Alaska Native tribes.

For any of these iterations, tables in this summary file will be shown only if the specific population threshold is met. The population for the particular iteration in a specific geographic area must be at least 100 people (based on a 100-percent count) of the specified population and include at least 50 unweighted sample cases. This threshold is based on respondents who reported only one tribe.

Census 2000 provides more extensive data for tribes than ever before. The question on race asked respondents to report the race or races they considered themselves to be. Also, respondents were asked to provide the name of their enrolled or principal tribes. American Indians and Alaska Natives could provide one or more tribes. Tribal data reflect the written entries reported on the questionnaire and were based on self-identification. Therefore, the information on tribe does not reflect any designation of federal- or state-recognized tribe. Census 2000 data on tribes may differ from other sources, such as tribal governments and the Bureau of Indian Affairs within the Department of Interior.

Some tabulations in this summary file show the total number of respondents who reported only as American Indian and Alaska Native by marking this response category on the questionnaire and by providing no name of a specific American Indian or Alaska Native tribe. Also included are respondents who did mark the response category and did provide the name of only one tribe. These tabulations represent data for the population shown as "American Indian and Alaska Native alone" and represent the minimum number of people who reported as American Indian and Alaska Native.

Other tabulations in this summary file provide cumulative tallies for the American Indian and Alaska Native population by indicating each tribe alone or in any combination with one or more races. These tabulations represent the maximum number of responses for any given combination of race rather than a measure of respondents. For example, people who reported "Navajo and Apache" were included in the tabulation shown for "Navajo alone or in any combination" and also in the tabulation for "Apache alone or in any combination." When this type of presentation is used, the tallies will add to more than the total population because people are included in more than one category.

The category, American Indian or Alaska Native includes individuals having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment. It includes people who indicated their race or races by marking this response category on the questionnaire and writing in the name(s) of their principal or enrolled tribe(s) such as Chippewa, Navajo, Navajo and Apache, Rosebud Sioux, Alaskan Athabascan, Inupiat, Sealaska, Haida, and Tlingit.

For Census 2000, the listing of American Indian and Alaska Native tribes was derived from the American Indian Tribal Detailed Classification List for the 1990 census, which was expanded to include individual Alaska Native villages when provided as a written response to the question on race. The list was updated based on a December 1997 Federal Register Notice issued by the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.

In an iterated file such as this summary file, the universes households, families, and occupied housing units are classified by the race of the householder. The universe subfamilies is classified by the race of the reference person for the subfamily. In a husband/wife subfamily, the reference person is the husband; in a parent/child subfamily, the reference person is always the parent. The universes population in households, population in families, and population in subfamilies are classified by the race of the individuals within the household, family, or subfamily without regard to the race of the householder. Notes follow selected tables to make the classification of the universe clear. In any population table where there is no note, the universe classification is always based on the race of the person: In all housing tables, the universe classification is based on the race of the householder.
